Chief Financial Officer

The Chief Financial Officer is a strategic partner and will report to the Chief Executive Officer or other Board members as required.  The CFO is responsible for the planning, implementation, managing and running of all company financial activity, including business planning, forecasting and certain contract negotiations.  The CFO will direct all fiscal functions of the corporation in accordance with regulatory and advisory organizations, while balancing responsibilities of stewardship and business partnership.

Job Description:

Your daily responsibilities will include:

Strategic Planning:

  • Under direction of the Executive Management team, provide strategic recommendations to the CEO and members of the Executive Management team while facilitating organizational accountability and transparency;
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s fiscal function and performance; evaluate and advise on long-term business and financial planning and regulatory action;
  • Participate in the development, validation, implementation and evaluation of the corporation’s business plans and programs as a strategic partner;
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the organization (i.e. evaluation of potential mergers and acquisitions, pension investments and funds);
  • As needed, participate in the corporation’s investor and stakeholder engagement strategy;

Operational Leadership and Compliance:

  • Review all formal finance and IT related procedures; enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the corporation; oversee data and information management;
  • Optimize the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position;
  • Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs;
  • Preserve value through asset and liability management, risk management in relation to organizational objectives, and implementation of effective internal control systems;
  • Balance short-term concerns and pressures (i.e. cash management, liquidity, and profitability) with long-term vision and sustainable success of the corporation;
  • Fulfill stewardship responsibilities by ensuring effective compliance and control; respond to ever increasing regulatory developments, including financial reporting, capital requirements, and corporate responsibility; act as a custodian of corporate governance;

Forecasting, Budgeting and Reporting:

  • Manage processes for all financial forecasting and budgets; provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the CEO, the Board and other senior executives in performing their responsibilities;
  • Oversee preparation of all financial reporting; ensure relevant and useful internal and external business reporting, including preparation of; quarterly and annual financial statements, Management Discussion and Analysis and financial data for press releases, when required;

Corporate and Staff Leadership:

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, direction and management of finance, accounting, and IT teams; provide direct supervision of the Controller and VP of IT;
  • Establish and develop effective partnerships with senior management and external partners and stakeholders, creating a common vision and view of organizational performance, challenges and opportunities;
  • Establish credibility throughout the organization and with the Board as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges; Demonstrate ethical leadership and business integrity;
  • Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to others within the financial discipline, including continuous improvement of budget and forecasting processes through education of department managers on financial issues impacting department budgets;
  • Advise from a financial perspective on potential contracts in which the corporation may enter;
  • Evaluate the finance division structure and staffing plan for continual improvement of group efficiency and effectiveness, as well as provide individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) of individuals;
  • Drive and manage organizational change;
  • Engage and communicate effectively with colleagues, investors and analysts, auditors and regulators, government, suppliers, customers, industry and trade groups and other stakeholders, internal and external;

  • Ability to asses and optimize benefits and manage the challenges arising from trends, such as centralization, outsourcing, and offshoring of the F&A function, while ensuring that financial talent and capability is retained and developed within the organization.

Other Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Business Administration; Master’s Degree in Business Administration strongly preferred;
  • CPA designation required;
  • 10+ years’ experience in finance industry and managing diverse teams in both public and private company settings;
  • Proven experience driving financial performance and demonstrated success leading a complex, dynamic and demanding work environment;
  • Professional experience in the regulated cannabis industry considered a strong asset (but not required); and
  • Must have a valid passport and ability to travel and accommodate a changing schedule.
